WAS THE SCULPTURE MADE OF ONE BLOCK
OF MARBLE?
To save on marble and because
sculptors often encountered flaws in large blocks of marble, statues were
often made in several pieces that were connected by pins and dowels at
disguisable junctures. When the marble trade reached its peak in the
second century AD, sculptors preferred to use one block and connect
potentially precarious limbs with marble struts, bands of unworked marble.
