The Identification of the Marcus Aurelius 
By the fifteenth century, Renaissance scholars had identified the rider on the equestrian statue as being Marcus Aurelius rather than Constantine.

The identification of the emperor was probably facilitated by comparing the rider’s visage to the face of Marcus Aurelius found on coins and portrait busts.
