What is the Renaissance?
The word Renaissance means re-birth.  In the case of Rome it signifies a rebirth of classical art and learning.  Artists and scholars of the 16C challenged themselves to better the achievements of their ancient Greek and Roman predecessors.  In order to do this, they read ancient texts, drew ancient sculpture, studied and measured the buildings still standing in the Roman Forum, and made archaeological forays into the Golden House of Nero.

Is it true that Romulus and Remus were raised by a She-Wolf?
Maybe yes, probably no.  But does it matter?  We all have trouble with our parents now and then!

Were there public relations firms in Ancient Rome?
In a way, yes.  Ancient Roman art and architecture was rhetorical, that is, it was intended to convey a particular message and to convince its viewer of something.  For example, Roman Emperors carefully manipulated their portraits in order to convince people of their power, their prestigious ancestry, and their good qualities.  And in the Roman Forum, Julius Caesar undertook the construction and re-construction of buildings meant to convince the public that he was working for the good of the state.

What do Julius Caesar & Prada have in common?

When were special effects invented?
The ancient Romans had their own kinds of special effects that enhanced gladiatorial games in the Colosseum.  But the real era of visual effects was the 17C.  Baroque artists didn't just make art, they crafted "You won’t believe your eyes" apparitions that were meant to awe and amaze viewers.
