romantic rome
Rome is a city of romance but also of romantics. The Romantic poets Keats and Shelley lived in Rome and wrote about the
attractions of the city
’s ancient past.
We can stage our Reading for Pleasure: Romantic Rome program at the
Keats-Shelley House on Piazza di Spagna or in the Protestant Cemetery, where
Keats is buried.
The program includes an introduction to the Romantic poets; readings of selected
works by such Romantic writers such as Keats, Shelley, and Byron; followed by
readings of 19th- and 20th-century authors inspired by the Romantics, from
Oscar Wilde to the Beat Poets.
roma amor: what’s love got to do with it?
We stage our Roma Amor program while making a private visit to the Villa Farnesina, a palace built by Renaissance money management mogul, Agostino
Chigi.
Chigi’s interest in classical antiquity inspired him to hire artists such as Raphael
and Peruzzi to decorate his villa, and in their paintings they brought
mythological love back to life
. As we admire the Villa Farnesina’s extraordinary frescoes, depicting great lovers like Cupid & Psyche and Alexander & Roxane, we’ll learn how the villa came into being and we’ll listen to readings of ancient love stories.
bacchanalia
Always a crowd-pleaser, our Bacchanalia event is a celebration of the ancient
god of wine, Bacchus.
Gathered in a charming wine bar or restaurant, we sip Bacchus’s divine nectar and listen to light-hearted literary selections.
The prose and poetry we read recounts the life of Bacchus and celebrates the joys that come from drinking the fruit of the vine. We also read from the writings of wine experts, past and present. They advise us about the best ways to drink, the miraculous properties of wine,
and the reasons that one should sell no wine before it
’s time!
